Six degrees of separation. Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six or fewer social connections away from each other. As a result, a chain of "friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It is also known as the six handshakes rule.
SixDegrees.com was a social network service web site that initially lasted from 1998 to 2000 and was based on the Web of Contacts model of social networking. It was named after the concept of six degrees of separation [4] and allowed users to list friends, family members and acquaintances whether registered on the site or not.

Assuming everyone knows at least 44 people, and that each of those people knows an entirely new 44 people, and so on, the maths shows that in just six steps everyone could be connected to 44^6, or 7.26 billion people - more than are alive on Earth today.
