The Love Boat is an American romantic comedy - drama television series created by Wilford Lloyd Baumes that originally aired on ABC from September 24, 1977 to May 24, 1986. In addition, three TV movies aired before the regular series premiered and four specials and a TV movie aired after the series ended.
Tennis pro Maureen Mitchell (Brenda Benet) runs into sportswriter John Ballard (Bill Bixby), who defamed her in his column. Cyril Wolfe (Milton Berle) annoys his wife Anita (Audra Lindley) and fellow passengers (Lynn Adams and Britt Leach) with constant practical jokes.
Award-winning anthropologist Milo Endler (Harry Morgan) and Vivian (Katherine Helmond), his wife of fifteen years, are on their way to a dig in the South Pacific. Milo's disgraced colleague Deke Donner (José Ferrer) once embezzled a university's money to bet on the horses at the racetrack.
- Gavin MacLeod (Captain Merrill Stubing) MacLeod played the captain of the crew for the entire run of the series. Before joining the show, he starred on The Mary Tyler Moore Show for several years.
- Bernie Kopell (Adam "Doc" Bricker) Kopell was well known to audiences when he joined The Love Boat as the ship's doctor, having already enjoyed roles on That Girl and Get Smart.
- Fred Grandy (Burl "Gopher" Smith) Grandy already had a few roles on shows like Maude and Welcome Back Kotter when he made his Love Boat debut. But after the latter show ended, his life went in a brand new direction: Grandy was elected to Congress as a member of the House of Representatives for his home state of Iowa, where he served from 1987 to 1995.
- Ted Lange (Isaac Washington) Lange was a theater actor before he joined the team as the boat's bartender, making his Broadway debut in Hair. Also an accomplished writer/director, Lange wrote the screenplay for 1977's Passing Through and also wrote six episodes of The Love Boat while starring on the show.
