Krypton (from Ancient Greek: κρυπτός, romanized : kryptos 'the hidden one') is a chemical element; it has symbol Kr and atomic number 36. It is a colorless, odorless noble gas that occurs in trace amounts in the atmosphere and is often used with other rare gases in fluorescent lamps. Krypton is chemically inert .
Aug 9, 2024 · Krypton is the lightest of the noble gases that form isolable chemical compounds in macroscopic amounts. For many years it was considered to be totally unreactive. In the early 1960s, however, krypton was found to react with the element fluorine when both are combined in an electrical-discharge tube at −183 °C (−297 °F); the compound formed is krypton difluoride, KrF 2.
Krypton is an American science fiction television series developed by David S. Goyer for Syfy. Focusing on Seg-El ( Cameron Cuffe ), the grandfather of DC Comics superhero Kal-El / Superman, the series is set approximately 200 years before the birth of Superman and takes place on the eponymous fictional planet. Krypton premiered on March 21, 2018.
Krypton is used commercially as a filling gas for energy-saving fluorescent lights. It is also used in some flash lamps used for high-speed photography. Unlike the lighter gases in its group, it is reactive enough to form some chemical compounds. For example, krypton will react with fluorine to form krypton fluoride.
