This is the second of three episodes where Cheyenne's sidekick Smittyappears.This episode likely takes place in 1868 when historic Julesburg was during its infamous lawless period, and Wyoming became a territory of the US.Cheyenne and Smitty come across a lost wagon train of settlers and their cattle. The pair agree to guide the settlers to nearby Fort Laramie so they can hire a guide to take them to the Wyoming territory. That night, rustlers attack and cause a stampede. The Battle of Julesburg took place on January 7, 1865, near Julesburg, Colorado between 1,000 Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Lakota Indians and about 60 soldiers of the U.S. army and 40 to 50 civilians. The Indians defeated the soldiers and over the next few weeks plundered ranches and stagecoach stations up and down the South Platte River valley.
It's been five years since Ed McKeever's two daughters, Ruth and Jenny, were kidnapped by Chief Tanaka. A scout has just located the women and Cheyenne is assigned to lead the rescue mission of volunteers made up mostly of stockade prisoners from a nearby fort.
