"Pilot" is the first episode in the first season, and is the first overall episode of Ghost Whisperer.
Melinda encounters the ghost of a soldier who died in a helicopter crash during the Vietnam war.
Melinda and her grandmother are walking through a funeral home, when her grandmother asks her to sit down next to an elderly gentleman. Her grandmother and Melinda then walk up to the open casket, where Melinda realizes that the elderly man she was sitting next to is the man in the casket.
The man walks up to her and asks for her help. He tells her that he didn't have time to tell his wife goodbye or how much he loves her after 26 years of marriage, and asks Melinda to pass on the message for him.
Many years later, we see Melinda's wedding. While Melinda and her husband, Jim, are dancing, Melinda sees something strange on the window. The marking looks like the points on a compass. Jim asks if she sees something, and for the sake of their wedding, she tells him no.
Later, while Melinda is looking at the window, Jim's brother, Dan, talks to her. Melinda tells her that Jim has been struggling following the death of a patient, and Dan tells her something she can tell Jim whenever he feels like quitting. Melinda's friend Andrea pulls her to the dance floor, and catches the bouquet that Melinda throws.
The next day, Melinda goes into the antique store that she owns, and finds a compass that neither she nor Andrea brought in. Later that night, Jim shows Melinda their new house, which he had been working on in the evenings.
That night, Melinda wakes up from a bad dream, and is comforted by Jim. She goes into the bathroom to brush her teeth, and the compass shows up on her fogged bathroom mirror. She walks out into the hallway, and is confronted by the spirit of a solider, who asks her to help him.

The pilot involves a long-dead Vietnam vet haunting Melinda so that he can get in touch with his son. Melinda, played by the ever-fetching Jennifer Hewitt in peasant dresses, lots of costume jewelry and low-cut tops, is a spiritualist who can see, hear and talk to ghosts.
