    SPOILERS AHEAD

Jack Morton stands at his mother's grave with a letter from Belgrave University in his hand. At the same time, Vera Stone and Margaret Crain debate on Jack's worthiness to be not only enrolled at Belgrave, but also his candidacy in the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose. Crain thinks he is not due to his impoverished state and has gone as far as sending Jack the letter as a rejection. Stone has other ideas, though, and argues in favor of Jack. Once Crain leaves, Stone, using her position of being in charge of both the university and the Blue Rose temple, magically changes the letter of rejection to one of acceptance with the promise of a full scholarship and living expenses. He moves out of his grandfather's house, but not before both realize that this is just step one in a revenge plan concocted over the years against the Order of the Blue Rose and, more specifically, Edward Coventry, Jack's father, who unknowingly impregnated Jack's mother and then forgot about her. She pined so much for Coventry that she ended up killing herself in grief, thus causing her father and son to plot revenge on Coventry and the Order for having been behind it.

Jack's grandfather drops him off at college and Jack is soon abducted by unknown people. We find out that it is a Greek fraternity who has done this in hopes that Jack will join them. Jack begs off saying he is holding out for another organization. He leaves and meets his RA, Randall, who seems like a laid back guy, and his new roommate, Clayton Turner, known by the shortened name Clay, who seems a little weird. After Randall and Clay leave, Jack spots a guy across the hall receiving an invitation and a Blue Rose. Before he can question him, however, the guy disappears into his room and locks the door.

Jack wanders campus and tracks the guy down, who turns out to be Weston Miller. He questions Miller about receiving the invitation which causes Miller to become belligerent at the questioning and attack Jack. Jack easily dodges Miller's attempts and subdues him until Alyssa Drake, who is trying to give a campus tour to the new students, breaks it up. Jack joins the tour and immediately takes over and shows off his knowledge of Belgrave's history and layout, much to Alyssa's shock and somewhat rueful admiration. Randall shows up and quashes Jack's flirting with Alyssa after the tour to offer to take Jack out for a beer. Jack questions Randall about the Order, but Randall claims it is just an urban legend. Jack admits that he wants in the Order and confides that he wants the power that comes with it. He leaves Randall who looks on with a thoughtful gaze.

Miller is attacked and killed by an unknown something while doing his daily run and Stone brings Detective Hayashi to Jack's room for some questions because of Jack's confrontation with Miller earlier. When Jack mentions Alyssa as a possible alibi, Stone cuts off the interrogation and leaves Jack with a warning that further violence between students won't be tolerated. When Jack turns back from closing the door once Stone leaves, he spots an invitation and Blue Rose on his previously empty bed telling him to go to Kneebend Trail at dusk.

Jack arrives at the appointed time to see six other students also waiting. Most of them look upon Jack with disdain, but Amir approaches and tries to smooth things over with Jack. Suddenly two robed and masked figures appear to task them to find three coins because even though there are seven candidates, only three will be selected as Neophytes of the Order. They are told to find the coins, but to take only one and forbidden to reveal the location of any other to the other candidates. They are charged to find it by "night 5 in 24 hours." Jack thinks he recognizes Alyssa's voice as one of the two masked figures. Later, at the bar, the candidates who were snobbish towards Jack all puzzle out what they are supposed to do and all agree to do anything in their power to make sure Jack doesn't get in to the Order.
