Juan de Flandes ("John of Flanders"; c. 1460 – by 1519) was a Flemish painter active in Spain from 1496 to 1519. His actual name is unknown, although an inscription Juan Astrat on the back of one work suggests a name such as "Jan van der Straat". Jan Sallaert, who became a master in Ghent in 1480, has also been suggested.
The three paintings by Juan de Flandes at the Metropolitan Museum are Christ Appearing to His Mother, ca. 1496 , The Marriage Feast at Cana, ca. 1500–1504 , and Saints Michael and Francis, ca. 1505–9 . Relatively close in date, they represent distinctly different styles.
While the names Juan de Flandes and Juan Flamenco point to the painter's Flemish origins, his family name is unknown and his activity before arriving in Spain untraced. Of Flemish origin, he was nicknamed Juan de Flandes (John of Flanders). He was active in the service of Queen Isabella of Castille in 1496 and from 1498 until her death in 1504. He is almost certainly identifiable with the Juan de Flandes who was later active in Salamanca and Palencia.
