Jan Lievens is among the most fascinating and enigmatic Dutch artists of the seventeenth century. Daring and innovative as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker, he created character studies, genre scenes, landscapes, formal portraits, and religious and allegorical images that were widely praised and highly valued during his lifetime.
Jan Lievens (born Oct. 24, 1607, Leiden, Neth.—buried June 4, 1674, Amsterdam) was a versatile painter and printmaker whose style derived from both the Dutch and Flemish schools of Baroque art. A contemporary of Rembrandt, he was a pupil of Joris van Schooten (1616–18) and of Rembrandt’s teacher Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam (1618–20).

Lievens (1607-1674) was already an apprentice painter at the age of eight: first in his native Leiden and from 1617 to 1619 under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Later, he moved back to Leiden, where he worked together with Rembrandt for over five years.
