Area code 405 is an area code created for Oklahoma. It was one of the first area codes created in October 1947. It initially covered the entire state of Oklahoma, but after it was split by 918 in 1953 [1] and 580 in 1997, [2] it now covers the central portion of the state.
History. Creation: Area code 405 was put into service in 1947 and was one of the original 86 area codes, and it originally served the entire state of Oklahoma. 405 was split in 1997 creating the need to update some of the phone numbers to area code 580. In 2021, area code 572 was created and is currently an overlay to 405.
The original North American area codes were established by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1947, after the demonstration of regional Operator Toll Dialing during the World War II period. The program had the goal of speeding the connecting times for long-distance calling by eliminating intermediary telephone operators.
