Welcome to the Town Historian. History of Cornwall. By an act of March 7, 1788, New Cornwall was founded. Known as the precinct of Cornwall since 1764, it was comprised of the present towns of Cornwall, Highlands, Blooming Grove, Monroe, and parts of Chester and Hamptonburgh.
Lewis Beach, a local congressman, wrote the first history of Cornwall in 1873. He stated that “the three things which conspire to give Cornwall the prominence it enjoys, are 1st The salubrity of the air; The beauty of the scenery; 3rd Its accessibility to the city.”. The Village was incorporated by a vote in December of 1884.
Cornwall, Town (pop. 12,307, 2000 census) located in Orange County in the mid-Hudson region, was founded in 1788 and settled by families of British descent, many of them Quakers.
