Hanging is a highly lethal method of suicide in that around 70% of those who attempt suicide using this method die. It is to be noted that only half of those who die by hanging are found fully suspended with their feet above the ground.

Mar 3, 2022 · In this study, term “suicide by hanging” includes deaths from suicide by hanging, strangulation and suffocation. Besides this, “suicides” include deaths from self-inflicted injury or intentional self-harm, but not those that are of undetermined intent.
Hanging is caused when a person is held by a rope around the neck. The Oxford English Dictionary says that hanging in this sense is "specifically to put to death by suspension by the neck". Hanging is often used as a form of execution or suicide. The first known account of execution by hanging was in Homer's Odyssey (Book XXII).
