Quibi, or "Quick Bites," is an upcoming mobile streaming app that will feature (among other things) short-form videos from prestigious creators like Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, and Doug Liman. Launching on April 6, 2020, Quibi costs $5 per month with ads ($8 for no ads), and was founded by former DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg and tech executive Meg Whitman.
The platform will release feature-length films in episodic chapters running around 10 minutes in length. Quibi's app will run exclusively on mobile platforms in the hopes of reaching a younger demographic. "What we say internally is we’d like to be the quality of HBO and offer customers the convenience of Spotify,” Whitman told the Los Angeles Times. “We’re not Facebook Watch. We’re not Snapchat. We’re not Instagram TV. We’re not YouTube. We’re Quibi, and it’s not denigrating those platforms at all ... but we’re staking out a premium position relative to those.”
Katzenberg went on to tell the LA Times that he hopes Quibi will be able to successfully combine the strengths of movies and episodic television into "the third generation of film narrative." In order to accomplish this ambitious task, Katzenberg and Whitman have secured over $1 billion in development funding, while also enlisting some of Hollywood...
The videos released on Quibi's platform are split into three categories: "Movies in Chapters," featuring long-form narratives split into 10-minute videos, "Unscripted and Docs," reality TV shows and docuseries, and "Daily Essentials," news shows from outlets like NBC and ESPN.
In recent news, the beloved comedy series Reno 911! is coming back for a seventh season on Quibi, with Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Thomas Lennon attached to write and star in the new season. Peter Principato will executive produce the series along with Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher.

As the competitive streaming market continues to grow, with the likes of Disney+ and the upcoming HBO Max and Peacock services, Qubi feels like a bit of an outlier with its unconventional "mobile-only" approach. However, the streamer is not the first company to attempt the challenge, although Verizon's Go90 mobile platform was shut down back in June 2018.
Where Verizon's Go90 failed, Katzenberg remains confident that his new company only needs to capture three percent of the 2.5 billion mobile users out there for Qubi to be "a massive success," according to the LA Times. Time will tell.
