Rohatyn (Ukrainian: Рогатин, Polish: Rohatyn) is a city located on the Hnyla Lypa River in Ivano-Frankivsk Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, in western Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Rohatyn urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: 7,521 (2022 estimate).
We research and apply the long, rich, and diverse history of Rohatyn’s prewar Jewish community to give context to the surviving heritage in Rohatyn, and to help between today’s modern Ukrainian residents and the city’s multicultural past.
Presented here is a timeline of Jewish presence in Rohatyn from first arrival to the start of the Great War. Jewish life in this timeline spans about 350 years, preceded by another two centuries of town history before Jews first arrived in Rohatyn.

During the first two years of WWII, Rohatyn along with much of southeastern Poland (former eastern Galicia, today western Ukraine) was occupied by Soviet military and administrative units, and life for Jews in the region was constrained but not mortally dangerous.
