The Palace of Versailles (⫽ v ɛər ˈ s aɪ, v ɜːr ˈ s aɪ ⫽ vair-SY, vur-SY; French: château de Versailles [ʃɑto d(ə) vɛʁsɑj] ⓘ) is a former royal residence commissioned by King Louis XIV located in Versailles, about 19 kilometers (12 mi) west of Paris, France.
Since 1979, the Palace of Versailles has been listed as a World Heritage and is one of the greatest achievements in French 17 th century art. Louis XIII 's old hunting pavilion was transformed and extended by his son, Louis XIV, when he installed the Court and government there in 1682.
