The Town of Bedford, with its 39.3 square miles encompassing the hamlets of Bedford, Bedford Hills and Katonah, is situated in northern Westchester County with a 2020 census population estimate of 17,309 residents. Race and Hispanic Origin: 75.3% White, 4.7% Black or African American, 6% Asian, 18.4% Hispanic or Latino.
Bedford, town (township), Westchester county, southeastern New York, U.S., north of White Plains, near the Connecticut state line. Bedford Village, the original settlement, was founded in 1680 by 22 farmers from Stamford, Connecticut, on a tract known as the hop ground that was purchased from.
Modern Bedford is composed of these three hamlets whose unique history and identity contribute to the town’s character as a whole - Bedford Village as the original settlement, Bedford Hills as the hub of railway transportation and Katonah as a planned development, moved by the necessity of progress. The unique character of Bedford Village is largely a result of our preservation efforts since our founding in 1916. The Society maintains 10 historic properties around the Village Green, operates a museum at the 1787 Court House and offers educational programs for students of all ages along with events for the community.
Katonah encompasses the Bedford Road area, a section of the hamlet designed by landscape architects G.S. and B.S. Olmstead. Noted for its Victorian architecture, Katonah now stands somewhat south of where the original hamlet was located before it was obliged to move in the late 1890’s to make way for the expansion of the New York City watershed when the Muscoot Reservoir was built.
