Jul 2, 2024 · Despite being a small town just outside of Portland, there are so many things to do in Cape Elizabeth Maine. Resting on the shores of Casco Bay, it is known for its rich history, genteel atmosphere, and spectacular views.
Cape Elizabeth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The town is part of the Portland – South Portland – Biddeford , Maine, metropolitan statistical area . As of the 2020 census , Cape Elizabeth had a population of 9,535.
- Fort Williams Park. Visitors to Cape Elizabeth are welcome to take a number of free guided walks in the immediate area. One of them is located in Fort Williams Park, where there are a number of historic sites to enjoy.
- Crescent Beach State Park. The State of Maine operates this park, whose highlight is a crescent-shaped stretch of sand, about a mile long. Found at Seal Cove off Bowery Beach Road, visitors will delight in the grassy sand dunes and gentle breezes throughout summer.
- Goddard Mansion. Built from granite for John Goddard in 1858, the town’s budget provides an annual allocation for keeping these ruins in good shape. Goddard, from Bangor in Maine, made his money from lumber, and this was his dream home in his dream location.
- Portland Head Lighthouse. The oldest lighthouse in Maine – and arguably the most photographed in the USA – is on the shoreline of Fort Williams Park. It deserves a visit on its own, although, as a working lighthouse, public access is denied.
- Portland Head Light. Within Fort Williams State Park stands the iconic Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest and most visited lighthouse. This lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in the late 1700s and was first used to warn citizens of coming British attacks.
- Portland Breakwater Light (Bug Light) Portland Breakwater Light, more commonly known as Bug Light, is a small lighthouse just off the coast of South Portland.
- Crescent Beach State Park. Crescent Beach State Park stands out as one of Portland’s premier coastal destinations. Its crescent-shaped shore is perfect for sunbathing, while its light surf makes swimming, watersports and fishing possible.
- Two Lights State Park. Two Lights State Park offers a picturesque vantage point to admire the rocky coastline of the Cape. Despite its name, the twin lighthouses are not visible from within the park.
