Hinton is a city in and the county seat of Summers County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,266 at the 2020 census. Hinton was established in 1873 and chartered in 1897. Hinton was named after John "Jack" Hinton, the original owner of the town site.
The remarkable Victorian-era railroad town of Hinton is enveloped by the rolling hills of southern West Virginia. Natural beauty abounds in this charming community, as it is the gateway to the New River Gorge National River, and in close proximity with both Bluestone State Park and Pipestem Resort State Park.

Woven into the mountains of Appalachia, along the scenic New River in Southern West Virginia, lies the quaint city of Hinton. Hinton is a “Railroad Town”, formed about 1871 with the tremendous building boom that occurred during the Gay ’90s period from 1890 to 1920.
Hinton is a city in Summers County, West Virginia, population 2,266 (2020). It borders the southern edge of New River Gorge National Park, and acts as an anchor to its southern end, being the closest town to Sandstone Falls and the park's Sandstone Visitors Center, located near exit 139 off I-64.
Hinton, WV (West Virginia), the seat of Summers County, was established in 1872 and incorporated as a city in 1897. Its population was 2,676 as of the 2010 census. Much of its historic downtown is protected as part of the Hinton National Historic District.
