McPherson (/ m ə k ˈ f ɜːr s ən / mək-FUR-sən) is a city in and the county seat of McPherson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 14,082. The city is named after Union General James Birdseye McPherson, a Civil War general. It is home to McPherson College and Central Christian College.
May 29, 2024 · General McPherson was a Civil War Union officer for whom the city and county is named. At age 35 he was killed during the Battle of Atlanta, six years prior to the founding of McPherson County. Why is the community named for a man who never entered the state of Kansas?
