This is the official first stop along the 17-Mile Drive and honestly one of the least memorable, I didn’t even bother taking photographs. A typo on an early map that included drawings of illustrated sheep is what changed this stop’s name from Shepard’s Knoll to Shepherd’s Knoll.

We opted to drive by this stop, but if you have time Seal Rockis where you can see the Gingerbread House, explore tidepools, and walk around. Fan Shell Beach Overlook had beautiful views but we decided to continue driving. We were at the end of a long day driving and hiking the Big Sur coast and still had 8 more stops on this route to check out.
We chose to drive by Cypress Point Lookout, too. While it looked beautiful, we felt it was OK to pass to make sure we had time to view the rest of the stops. You may be wondering if this trip is worth it at this point and it is! I promise!

Dec 18, 2023 · Yes, unfortunately there is a fee to drive this privately-owned stretch of road (whether you are doing the 17 Mile Drive or not). The fee (as of May 2019) is $10.50 per vehicle. However, those on bicycles can enter for free. Motorcycles are not allowed on the road.
- Shepherd’s Knoll. Shepherd’s Knoll is the first official stop on the 17 Mile Drive! It gives great views of Monterey Bay and even the Santa Cruz mountains, but from kinda far away.
- Huckleberry Hill. Wait – huckleberries?! YES! This stop on the 17 Mile Drive was named after all the native huckleberry bushes in this area. Although unfortunately you won’t be able to try any.
- Spanish Bay Beach and The Links at Spanish Bay. This is kinda a two-in-one, and one of my favorite 17 Mile Drive stops. There’s the Links at Spanish Bay (the golf course) and Spanish Bay Beach (which is, you guessed correctly, a beach!).
- Restless Sea. This will be another quick stop on the 17 Mile Drive. And like its name implies, this is one of the most turbulent sections of coastline over here in Pebble Beach!
