300 was a surprise smash when it hit screens back in 2006. An action film based on a Frank Miller comic book about 300 doomed Spartans, directed by the guy who made the Dawn of the Dead remake, and starring a group of relative unknowns doesn’t sound like box office gold. But the film’s tragic storyline, stylised action, and combination of swords, sandals, six-packs and blood struck a nerve with audiences, making it one of the most successful films of that year.
So it’s no surprise that 300 is getting a belated sequel. Or more accurately a prequel/sequel, as Rise of an Empire – again based on the work of Miller – takes place before, during and after the events of the original, with the storyline frequently running in parallel.
We therefore get some history, including an explanation of the grievance that started the whole sorry affair, and back story, with one of the film’s most interesting sequences revolving around exactly how Xerxes came to be a golden God.
But the story proper is one that’s very similar to its predecessor, albeit wetter. Sullivan Stapleton plays Themistokles, a Greek general who finds himself on a collision course with the Persians. However, where the Spartans of the first film were isolationists whose only motivation was self-preservation, Themistokles is fighting for a united Greece, his intention to spread the new Athenian concept of democracy.
Until that point however, Rise of an Empire is a sumptuous feast for the eyes that’s a worthy sequel to the action classic that doesn’t improve on the formula, but does entertain for the majority of its run-time.
