Kettering opened in 1965 in response to the growing Detroit Public School system (DPS) and to serve the needs of factory workers and their families in east Detroit. The school is named after Charles F. Kettering, co-founder of DELCO and head of research at General Motors for 27 years.

Built in 1964 on the eastside of Detroit, Michigan, Kettering high school was named after Charles F. Kettering the famous American inventor, and head of research at General Motors. In 2010 DPS planned to consolidate Kettering with Southeastern High School .
