5 days ago · Diophantus's riddle is a poem that encodes a mathematical problem. In verse, it read as follows: 'Here lies Diophantus,' the wonder behold. Through art algebraic, the stone tells how old: 'God gave him his boyhood one-sixth of his life, One twelfth more as youth while whiskers grew rife; And then yet one-seventh ere marriage begun; In five ...
"Solving this simultaneously gives S=42 as the age of the son and D=84 as the age of Diophantus." Now, I don't claim to be great at math, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't work out. 2 * 42 is definitely 84, and the riddle states that Diophantus waits 4 years after reaching double his son's age to commit suicide.
The age of Diophantus, a brilliant Greek mathematician of about 250 A.D., may be calculated from an epitaph which reads as follows: Diophantus passed one sixth of his life in childhood, one twelfth in youth, and one seventh more as a bachelor; five years after his marriage was born a son who died four years before his father at half his father's...
With this information, we can conlcude that 33/84 (D) + 7 years = 42/84 (D), and if we subtract 33/84 (D) on both sides, we get 7 years being equal to 9/84 (D) or 3/28 (D) For the answer, I multiplied both sides with 28/3 (D), to get to 65, 1/3 = 1 (D). This concludes that the answer must be 65 years and 4 months.
it is easy to conclude that Diophantus lived to the age of eighty-four. Diophantus’s only truly signi cant mathematical work is the Arithmetica, a text that treats the subject of nding solutions to indeterminate, or Dio-phantine, equations in two and three unknowns. We currently possess six
