Frederick J. Maher is an American drummer, music programmer and record producer. He was a member of the bands Massacre (1980–81), the Dance, Material, Scritti Politti, and has recorded and toured with Lou Reed. In 1984 he released Basic, an instrumental collaboration album with ex-Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine.

Massacre was founded in 1980 in New York City by guitarist Fred Frith, bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Fred Maher as an improvising and experimental rock band. They performed live for just over a year and recorded a studio album, Killing Time (1981).

Fred Maher. Fred Maher was the drummer in Scritti Politti from 1984 to 1988. He was born and raised in Manhattan and is the son of a New York writer. He is also as interested in the mechanics of the music as he is in playing. Fred played in a group called Material (originally called Zu ), and David Gamson used to see them play in New York.
Fred Maher is a staff producer at Elektra Records and drummer. Fred was a member of Material until the release of Memory Serves, after which he quit. From 1984-1988 Fred was the drummer of Scritti Politti. After leaving Scritti Politti he began producing and still performs as a studio musician.

Maher offered a decidedly slim production CV, but he understood Lou’s guitar tones and knew not to ask him to ‘sing’.
