Oct 18, 2023 · Why Was Hell On Wheels Canceled? AMC cancelled Hell on Wheels because the story was reaching an end. It didn’t have to do with ratings, at least according to showrunner John Wirth. The series premiere garnered 4.4 million viewers, second only to that of The Walking Dead at the time.

HoW was not cancelled. It's just reached the end of the storyline. The next sixteen episodes are going to be the shit just like the last 16 episodes of BB, which was also not cancelled.

On November 12, 2010 it was reported by Deadline that the executives at AMC were impressed with the pilot, and, coupled with the fact that the network had just cancelled their drama series, Rubicon, were likely to order Hell on Wheels to series.
The series has elicited mostly favorable response, and its epic portrayal of a diverse group of characters was praised. The viewership ratings held mostly steady throughout the series' run, with the expected season-to-season decline that a rare program manages to avoid.
