- Choose the Format. Should you publish an ebook or paperback? You should consider publishing your children’s book in both ebook format and paperback format.
- Know Your Target Category. To write a children’s book, you need to know your target category — that is, the age of your target audience. When publishing on Amazon, you will be asked to list what ages your book is for.
- Choose a Title. You need to choose a winning title for your children’s book. You could do this after it’s written, but having a title in mind may guide you in your writing.
- Find a Writing Style. You need to find a writing style that fits the age group you are writing for, the associated word count, the story you’re telling, and your own preferences.
- Read and research. Yes, you might want to just sit down in front of your laptop, computer, or maybe even a drawing board if you’re talented in illustrating and drawing and want to add a bit of flair to your novel, and just write your damn story.
- Choose the right themes. We’ve already established the separate categories of children’s fiction, and since board books and early readers’ books are lighter in terms of storyline and themes, here we will talk about prevalent themes in middle grade and above.
- Get into a child’s mindset. Baby board books show concepts, or things that are easily understood and learned by babies and toddlers. Picture books and picture story books also depend on the illustrations to convey the story.
- Create the story. It’s easier to create the story after you’ve decided on the category, the age of the protagonist and the intended readers, and the theme your book will focus on.
- DECIDE ON A STORY IDEA. First ask yourself, what you love or what are you really interested in? (Example: My story idea came to me after my husband and I moved to Bend, OR.
- MAKE A SCHEDULE. Decide on the number of pages and word count you’d like overall. This is when you’ll need to do some of that research I spoke of.
- WRITE THE STORY. Create a rough outline to figure out how you want the story to flow. If it’s a traditional story format then write a brief outline of your beginning middle and end or if it’s more of a freestyle poem format then write anything you want to be sure to include and in what order so you have a roadmap for yourself to follow.
- ILLUSTRATE THE STORY. Make a mockup of your book. This is really helpful in figuring out the sequence of your illustrations. I suggest doing it analogue style because it was way easier for me to picture the book including the cover and title page, but you can of course just do this digitally if that’s what’s easier for you!
