Birth of Modern Gospel. Formed in Trinity, Texas, around 1932 by bass singer J. J. Farley and tenor S. R. (Senior Roy) Crain, the Soul Stirrers were first recorded by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1936.

Just a month later, in October 1960, Listen To The Angels Sing, with Tolling On on the B-Side was released as The Soul Stirrers’ fourth single for S.A.R. Records.

Jun 27, 2018 · Jimmy Outler was ex-lead of The Soul Stirrers during the 1960s, and he, in my opinion, will go down as an underrated gospel lead! After leaving the Soul Stirrers, he recorded songs with the Brooklyn All-Stars, one in which was released as a single -- "How Long Has It Been?"
The Soul Stirrers left Specialty in 1959 and began recording for Cooke’s new SAR label. Later lead singers included Jimmy Outler, James Davis, and Willie Rogers. The group split into two factions in the Seventies.
