    Lamar Alexanderis born in Maryville, Tennessee, to an elementary school principal and a preschool teacher. Alexander is a seventh-generation East Tennessean.

    Sets a record at Vanderbilt University as a member of the 440-yard relay team. He is now a member of the Vanderbilt Athletic Hall of Fame.
