    Lee Grant (Lyova Haskell Rosenthal) an American actress and film director well known for playing the role of a young shoplifter in William Wyler’s detective story. She as well featured in movies such as The Heat of the Night (1967), and Shampoo (1975), Storm Fear, and Middle of the Night.

    Grant began her professional stage debut as an undergraduate in Oklahoma in 1944. In 1948, she made her Broadway debut in Joy to the World. Lee established herself as a dramatic method actress on and off-Broadway, receiving recognition for her role as a shoplifter in Detective Story in 1949.

    Her first significant Broadway appearance, at 22, was in “Detective Story,” a small part of a shoplifter described in the script as being 40 years old. He picked up her accent and style from the people he met on the train.     In 1953, she performed Rose Peabody on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow.
