Netflix's The Umbrella Academy was easily one of the best new superhero series of 2019. Clearly, IGN's readers agree, as the series won the IGN People's Choice Awards for Best New TV Series of 2019 and Best Comic Book Series of 2019. And now, at long last, the series is slated to return for a second season this summer.

To help you brush up on all things Umbrella Academy, here's a breakdown of everything we know about Season 2 so far. Read on to learn when the series returns to Netflix, what cast members to expect, and what the plot will be this time around.

Netflix has finally announced the Season 2 premiere date for The Umbrella Academy. The series returns on July 31, 2020.

By the time the series returns, it'll have been well over a year since Season 1 debuted on Netflix on February 15, 2019. Despite it being an immediate hit (with an estimated 45 million households tuning in) and a Season 2 renewal following in April 2019, Umbrella Academy is taking its sweet time coming back. But given the quality of Season 1, we have little doubt the wait will be worth it.

Fans can expect plenty of familiar faces in Season 2, both in front of and behind the camera. Showrunner/executive producer Steve Blackman is again at the helm of the series. Blackman is also writing the season premiere and finale episodes. The show's executive producers also include Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá (the last two being the creators of the original Umbrella Academy comic book series).

Most of the main cast members from Season 1 will be returning, including Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Number Five), and Justin Min (Ben). Given how heavily time travel looks to play a role in Season 2, it's not impossible we'll see more of dead characters like Colm Feore's Sir Reginald Hargreeves or his faithful servant Dr. Pogo.

Netflix has debuted a series of stylish new posters for The Umbrella Academy: Season 2. They don't necessarily reveal much about the plot or direction of these upcoming episodes, but you can check out all of these posters in the gallery below:

Netflix has yet to release an official teaser trailer for The Umbrella Academy: Season 2. The streamer has a habit of holding back on major promotion until the final month or two before a show's release, so we wouldn't expect a trailer to hit until at least June 2020.

The good news is that Netflix has dropped a fun little teaser for Season 2. The show's main cast recorded themselves at home recreating the iconic dance sequence from the Season 1 premiere.

The plot of The Umbrella Academy's second season is still mostly shrouded in mystery. While Season 1 was largely based on the first graphic novel in the series, The Apocalypse Suite, the radically different ending suggests Season 2 will veer in a different direction. The biggest difference between the comic and Netflix series is that the Hargreeves family failed to stop the apocalypse in the Season 1 finale.

Blackman explained this key plot change at a press junket for Season 1: “What drove the ending change was simply because it was Netflix and because... people like to binge these shows, we wanted a hanger, that really wanted you to come back for Season 2, something that left you [saying] 'I need to know what happens. I’ve got to come back.' That’s why the ending was adjusted to leave a moment hanging.”

Season 1 ends with Allison accidentally unleashing Vanya's pent-up power and triggering the destruction of Earth, at which point Number Five uses his powers to drag his siblings into the past. Given that the main characters are depicted as teens at the very end of Season 1, we can infer the team traveled back to the early 2000's and their glory days as underage superheroes. How long our heroes will remain in teen form remains to be seen, but clearly they've been given a second chance to undo the apocalypse.

We're also expecting the redemption of Vanya to be a major focus in Season 2, though the cast members seem to have differing opinions on whether Vanya will truly turn to good. Hopper told us, "It depends on if we can get her out of this mind-state she’s [in] right now. If she’s so on this hellbent thing that ‘my siblings are the reason I am like this' and is so down that path…" Raver-Lampman was more optimistic: " I would say the Allison in me says she’s redeemable."

We're also anticipating a much greater focus on Ben Hargreeves, especially given that actor Justin Min has been bumped up to series regular status in Season 2. We may even learn the full truth behind Ben's mysterious death and/or see that death prevented through the magic of time travel.

It should be noted that The Umbrella Academy Vol. 2: Dallas does deal with time travel. However, that story involves some characters travelling back to the 1960's and features an alternate take on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, so we're not expecting Season 2 to draw much inspiration from that story.

There's currently no word on whether The Umbrella Academy will be renewed for a third season. Given the show's popularity to date, we're pretty confident a renewal will come, though the untimely demise of Netflix's Marvel franchise proves that popularity alone isn't always enough.

Assuming Season 3 is greenlit, we can probably expect an announcement to drop anywhere from a few days to a few months after Season 2's July 31 debut. The question then becomes when Season 3 will actually materialize. Fans should probably expect another 18-month gap at least, meaning Season 3 wouldn't appear until late 2021 or even early 2022. The long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic may delay that release even further. Season 2 wasn't seriously affected by the pandemic, as filming wrapped back in November 2019. But it may be some time yet before it's safe for cameras to start rolling on Season 3.

Currently, Way and Bá have published three Umbrella Academy graphic novels, the most recent being dubbed Hotel Oblivion. Season 3 may be based on that story, or the series could continue to diverge from the path laid out by the comics. Either way, we'l have a much better idea of what's to come once Season 2 finally drops.
