- DON’T wear white. This one is obvious, but bears repeating: wedding guests should avoid wearing white dresses! The color is reserved for the bride only.
- DO wear a dress or outfit that aligns with the dress code. Be courteous of the dress code of the wedding. You can typically find the dress code mentioned on the wedding invitation, but it may be listed on the couple’s wedding website instead.
- DON’T wear a dress that is too revealing or skimpy. Wear a nice dress to the wedding that flatters your figure without being too tight or revealing. You can still look great and show off your curves, but choose something that’s elegant and sophisticated.
- DO choose a seasonal dress. You probably won’t reach for a dress that is wintry for a spring wedding, but this tip refers mostly to the fabric and the length.
- Clothing Outside the Dress Code. "You show up to the wedding to honor the couple. Your appearance should reflect that," says Julie Sabatino, a wedding fashion stylist at The Stylish Bride.
- Anything Loud and Flashy. One of the biggest rules of dressing for a wedding is to never outshine the couple. Avoid sequined ball gowns, sparkly tiaras, sky-high platform heels, or other articles of clothing that will draw attention away from the bride.
- A White Dress. Unless you're the bride, wearing a white dress to a wedding is (still) a major faux pas. Leave all white, ivory, and champagne-hued shades alone, unless the invitation specifically designates an all-white dress code.
- Your Everyday Attire. It doesn't matter if the dress code requests "casual" attire, jeans, T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, and sneakers are never appropriate to wear as a wedding guest.
- White. One of the most obvious mistakes at a wedding is to match the bride. You should avoid wearing white at all costs. This includes ivory, off-white or even a light blue hue.
- A Black Tuxedo. Just as ladies don’t want to upstage the bride, gentlemen don’t want to upstage the groom. Instead of an overly formal black tuxedo, men should dress in a suit or a blazer.
- Anything Too Revealing. Skip the skimpy cocktail dress and opt for something a little more on the conservative side. Dresses and skirts should be approximately at knee-length.
- Denim or Jeans. While you might assume that a barnyard wedding theme calls for your favorite pair of jeans, this is not the case. Unless the wedding invitation explicitly says to wear denim, opt for some well-tailored trousers instead.
