To calculate exponents such as 2 raised to the power of 2 you would enter 2 raised to the fraction power of (2/1) or 22 1 2 2 1. To calculate radicals such as the square root of 16 you would enter 16 raised to the power of (1/2).
The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64. In words: 8 2 could be called "8 to the second power", "8 to the power 2" or simply "8 squared". Another example: 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.

If an exponent of a number is a fraction, it is called a fractional exponent. Exponents show the number of times a number is replicated in multiplication. For example, 4 2 = 4×4 = 16. Here, exponent 2 is a whole number. In the number, say x 1/y, x is the base and 1/y is the fractional exponent.
