Long explanation: The ending is open to interpretation, but i myself belive she is knocked out once she blows the explosive bolt on the umbilical, and everything that happens within the Torrens after that is a dream.

We want to reconcile these two seemingly mutually exclusive aspects of the alien's behavior but we CAN'T, and that's part of the reason the alien is so scary: its very nature defies what we think we know about something as basic as "intelligence".
