Anthony McCarten (born 28 April 1961) is a New Zealand writer and filmmaker. He is best known for writing big-budget biopics The Theory of Everything (2014), Darkest Hour (2017), Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), The Two Popes (2019), and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022).

Born in New Zealand in 1961, London-living Anthony McCarten is an award winning film-maker, novelist and playwright. He is an Honorary Literary Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Authors in ‘Recognition of Outstanding Literary Achievement’.
Anthony McCarten’s debut novel, Spinners, won international acclaim, and was followed by The English Harem, the award-winning Death of a Superhero, and Show of Hands. The four books have been translated into fourteen languages.
