Made by Golan-Globus Productions, the film is an adaptation of the 1938 Agatha Christie novel Appointment with Death featuring the detective Hercule Poirot. The screenplay was co-written by Winner, Peter Buckman, and Anthony Shaffer.

The first was in 1945 when Agatha Christie adapted it herself for stage. Christie kept the title, Appointment With Death, but removed the character of Poirot and changed the identity of the murderer. In 1988 it was adapted into a film, starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot.
