The name of this legendary local hangout - The Brotherhood of Thieves - is a nod to the title of an 1843 pamphlet written on Nantucket by Stephen S. Foster, in which Foster vigorously attacked those who continued to support the institution of slavery, even as the tide of abolition rose.
The Brotherhood of Thieves Riot refers to riots that occurred in the streets of Nantucket in the summer of 1842. The unusual sign that hangs over The Brotherhood restaurant on Broad Street serves as a reminder. Central to the sign is a man with horns sprouting from his head.

The Brotherhood of Thieves has been serving Nantucket since 1972. The restaurant serves American dishes and is comprised of three unique dining areas. The 1840s Whaling Bar on the lower level is decorated with exposed brick walls and wooden beams, darkly stained furniture and rustic décor to provide the feel of an authentic 1840s whaling bar.
The Brotherhood will be reopening this season, celebrating 50 years of good food and good drink on Nantucket Island. The brand new space will feature a full-service patio as well as four distinct full-service bars inside!
