The Certified Addiction Registered Nurse (CARN) is for RNs who have a minimum of 2,000 hours (one year) of nursing experience related to addictions as an RN. The Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advance Practice (CARN‐AP) is for RNs who hold a Master’s degree in Nursing.
Description. This examination, implemented by the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (ANCB), is designed to determine and recognize the ability of an individual to apply knowledge from nursing and related disciplines to the care of persons with problems resulting from patterns of abuse, dependence, and all aspects of addictions.
The CARN-AP certification exam is an in-person, computer-based test with 150 questions. Test takers have 3 hours to complete the exam. To pass, candidates must correctly answer 75% of the test questions. The CARN-AP exam covers the following topics: Opioid abuse and disorders: 35-37 questions (24%) Alcohol abuse and disorders: 35-37 questions (24%)
