Instead, it is the rider line-up that has at least changed by two notable riders – American Andrew Short and Botswanan Ross Branch who made a name for himself as a privateer stage winner in 2020.
The five categories of the Dakar. The Dakar features five categories of vehicles. Motorbikes, quads, cars (T1/T2), lightweight vehicles (T3/T4) and trucks (T5) have given their riders and crews the chance to experience an extraordinary adventure and discover the breathtaking landscapes of the 29[PL1] countries traversed since the first edition in 1979.
- Car. Prodrive Hunter. With 600hp and twin-damped suspension at its disposal, the awe-inspiring Hunter hypercar has been developed at the Dakar Rally by Prodrive, drawing on experience in WRC, Le Mans and F1.
- Bike. KTM / Husqvarna / GasGas – 450 Rally. Built to exacting standards in the Austrian Alps, the flaming orange KTM 450 has been the bike of choice at the Dakar Rally this century, powering to 19 wins from 2001-2019 and 2023 where they lined up 1-2-3.
- Trucks. Iveco Powerstar. The new Iveco racing truck, the Powerstar has a whopping specially engineered 13-liter, six-cylinder, 24-valve engine developing a massive 1000hp and 3600Nm of torque to drive the 9.3kg truck.
- Challenger (Buggy) Can-Am Maverick XRS Turbo. Powered by a 900cc engine developing 200hp, the Maverick only weighs 880.9kg, making it super fast over rough terrain thanks to its springy suspension and aggressive tread tires.
