Prognosis. The case-fatality rate is 50 to 70%. Mortality, like incidence, is highest in children younger than 15 years and in persons older than 55 years, with no gender predilection. Death usually occurs during the first week; in surviving patients, recovery begins during the second week and may progress rapidly.
