Photographs of the McCormick residence at 1000 N. Lake Shore Drive in Chicago which was originally built for N. Jones by the architect S.S. Beman (ca. 1880s). It was occupied by General Joseph T. Torrence until about 1895, when Edith Rockefeller McCormick purchased the building.
Dec 11, 2011 · I just stumbled upon the most wonderful web site dedicated to the legendary Villa Turicum, the Lake Forest estate built for Harold McCormick and his wife, Edith Rockefeller McCormick. The 44-room Italianate villa was constructed between 1908 and 1918.
The estate was purchased in 1956 by Robert Kendler of Community Builders. The house, found to be structurally unsound, was torn down. Lake Shore Drive was built in 1883 for Nathaniel Jones, a prosperous member of the Board of Trade. He was described as “one of the wealthiest and most successful businessmen in Chicago.”.
