Michael Gareth Justin Evans (12 May 1946 – 10 August 1980) was a British philosopher who made substantial contributions to logic, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. He is best known for his posthumous work The Varieties of Reference (1982), edited by John McDowell.

Gareth Evans was Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy at University College and, subsequently, Wilde Reader in Mental Philosophy. Widely regarded as one of the leading philosophers of his generation, Evans died in 1980 at the age of 34. The Faculty holds this annual lecture in his memory.

As an undergraduate from 1964 to 1967, Gareth Evans, a British philosopher of language and mind, studied for the PPE degree (philosophy, politics, and economics) at University College, Oxford, where his philosophy tutor was Peter Strawson.
This chapter focuses on two enduring features of Gareth Evans's work. The first is his rethinking of standard ways of understanding the Fregean notion of sense, and the second his sustained attempt to undercut the familiar opposition between Russellian and Fregean approaches to understanding thought and language.
