- Snag an Online Coupon. “Order groceries online at Walmart.com but check for a coupon code first through sites like CouponFollow.com which currently offers 20% off grocery orders of $50 or more,” Woroch said.
- Seek Cash Back. “Order groceries online through a cashback portal like CouponCabin.com and you can earn up to 2% back on your purchases on Walmart’s site,” Woroch said.
- Get a Walmart Co-Branded Credit Card. “The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card offers 5% back on orders placed online at Walmart.com and 2% back on in-store purchases and no annual fee,” Woroch said.
- Meal plan. Although they go hand in hand, meal planning is different from meal prepping. Meal planning involves deciding what you want to cook in a given week — in other words, you’re setting the menu.
- Use coupons. For the most part, the days of cutting coupons out of newspapers and catalogs are over, said Okamoto. “All you need to do is download the app to your favorite stores to digitally clip their coupons, and when you’re at the register, have the clerk scan the barcode,” she explained.
- Scout out sales. Beyond couponing, experts recommended zeroing in on broader sales while grocery shopping, which you can learn about online, via apps or in newspapers and catalogs.
- Join loyalty programs. Whether you use grocery delivery services or shop in-person, stores usually offer loyalty programs you can join — some are free, but others have a monthly or yearly fee.

- Do join Walmart+ if you regularly shop online for groceries. The store's new membership program, which costs $12.95 a month (or $98 a year), gets you unlimited free shipping on deliveries of groceries and other everyday items totaling $35 or more.
- Do consider Walmart's credit card. The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard gives you 5 percent back on purchases at Walmart.com and 2 percent back at Walmart stores.
- Don't pay for shipping. Walmart.com offers free next-day delivery on thousands of nongrocery items, with a minimum order of $35 — no Walmart+ membership required.
- Do take your prescriptions to the store. Walmart's pharmacy offers generic drugs starting at $4 a month. The generics program, which includes commonly prescribed medications such as metformin for diabetes and lisinopril for blood pressure, requires no membership fees or insurance.
