While Dennis and Mac attempt to AirBnB their way into a Rom-Com meat-cute (meat cube?), Frank and Charlie try to rope in Euro-strays for swinging sexual escapades in Always Sunny's Season 14 premiere - an episode directed by Sunny star Glenn Howerton.
"The Gang Gets Romantic" doesn't go for any bold or brash statements in the awesome opener for Season 14 (as Sunny itself aims to break the record for the longest-running live-action comedy series), it's just tried and true funny business like only The Gang can produce. The usual potent blend of "off-kilter moral compasses mixed with the inability to spot poor decision-making" that has made the show, and its ensemble, such an appealing and enduring exhibit.
Of course, every so often, Sunny floors fans with a stunner, whether it's the one-take "Charlie Work" from Season 10 or last year's phenomenal and heartfelt "Mac Finds His Pride." Aside from those peaks though, you've got the bones of the series - the wonderful workhorse episodes like this one that are all about everyone... well, trying to get laid. Whether it's Dennis thinking he can manufacture a situation where a traveling woman has to share a room with him (his own room, actually) or it's Dee thinking she can seduce a man in hardware store while pretending to buy a toilet plunger, this episode is back-to-basics Sunny and a solid gateway into Season 14.
Though there are many vile things on Sunny, it's always hard to top Charlie and Frank's abysmal, grimy living conditions. From sharing a dilapidated sofa bed to just the overall unwashed and unhygienic nature of their co-habitation, the idea of them convincing hot foreign backpackers to somehow join them in this apartment - AND have sex with them - might be the funniest thing about this chapter. And it's not even a straight gag - just the idea that this is somehow possible.
Of course, this is Always Sunny so it does wind up being possible (though the women are heroin addicts), but Frank and Charlie discover that they'd much rather spend time with the two men they got stuck with at first: their grotesque spiritual soulmates. So it's the "Gruesome Twosome" who wind up with the meet-cute/cube while Dennis and Mac's plot tragically spirals into predictable chaos and disarray. It's a fun reversal-of-fortune that nicely services a side-splitting season opener.
Always Sunny kicks off Season 14 strong, examining all the ways a rom-com can go dreadfully wrong. And as long as The Gang continues to be wrong about everything, and also willing to argue their invalid points ad nauseam, the show will always have legs.
