One of the important Irish artists of the nineteenth century, the painter James Mahoney (also Mahony) was a noted (and widely travelled) watercolourist, illustrator and sketcher, who among other things helped to pictorialize the tragedy of the Great Famine in Ireland (1846-51).
He quickly became known for his watercolour paintings, with townscapes from Rome, Venice, Paris, and Rouen. [1] His work included "highly romantic" engravings of scenes from Irish life, such as of the Great Irish Famine and of St Patrick's Day, the national day of Ireland. [2]
Although he was trained in the grand traditions of the Renaissance, and his own work had an Art Deco flamboyance, he had a surprising regard for the intimate and bucolic images of Samuel Palmer, the neo-primitive work of Henri Rousseau, and the deceptively simple small-scale paintings of Giorgio Morandi.
