  3. Despite its unique, unpredictable path to existence, in the end, “Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser” falls victim to the regular traps of the comedy sequel. There’s a sense that comedians fall back on the chemistry of their ensemble and don’t put in the necessary effort to make an old joke sound new again.

The long-awaited sequel is a tricky thing to pull off. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was a box office disaster nine years after the first Sin City wowed theatergoers. But such gaps pale in comparison to Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, which shows off its sick puppies (i.e. Joe’s biceps) some fourteen years after David Spade first gave life to Joe Dirt. And you know what? It still kinda works.

This movie isn’t for anyone who didn’t at least somewhat enjoy the first Joe Dirt, which premiered in theaters in April 2001. Back then most critics didn’t find much value in the sweet, silly tale of a lovable redneck trekking cross country to find his long lost parents. But the movie had its supporters and developed something of a cult appreciation. Some viewers -- myself included -- found Joe’s self-deprecating trailer park everyman endearing. It wasn’t so much the zany characters and pratfalls as Joe’s ill-advised bravado, his total lack of guile and his goofy catchphrases. (Life’s a garden. Dig it!) Something about a simple, resilient outcast getting the short end of the stick but never losing his generous spirit resonated. Despite a fourteen-year gap, all those same pieces still fit together, making Joe Dirt 2 an appropriate love letter to fans of the original.

At the end of Joe Dirt (spoiler a-Dirt!) Joe finally wins the love of his life, the gorgeous Brandy, played by Brittany Daniel. After two framing devices, the sequel finds Joe and Brandy the happy parents of triplets. But despite having a beautiful family that adores him, poor Joe and his outrageous mullet remain targets for abuse. When his children witness him being made the butt of a humiliating joke, Joe beings to question his lot in life. For a movie so inherently silly, it absolutely nails a particular sense of insecurity felt by fathers the world over: the fear that we’re not worthy of the love our children and partners give us.

This is a screwball comedy so after that tender moment of vulnerability things get wacky. With mixed results, the movie mashes up The Wizard of Oz, It’s a Wonderful Life, Back to the Future (Part II, I think) and Forrest Gump with some Sopranos, Castaway and Twister references thrown in there because why the hell not. Time travel, biker gangs and a classic rock soundtrack set the stage for one more redemptive ride down the highway of Joe Dirt’s life. (Driving a Hemi, obviously.)

It doesn't look like much, but Joe Dirt 2 has its title character's warm heart. David Spade is clearly having fun, as are his co-stars. Anyone who enjoyed the original will enjoy spending a little more time with Joe and his band of merry weirdos.
