The museum opened to the public on Armistice Day, November 11, 1924, in dedication to the memory of the 3,600 Californians who perished in World War I. Located in Lincoln Park in San Francisco, the Legion of Honor has provided access to priceless art for nearly 100 years.

The Legion of Honor, or more formally known as the “California Palace of the Legion of Honor”, is a part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. It is home to a vast collection of works and artifacts that span 4000 years of art history, all set out in a beautiful building that overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge.

Who we are. Together, the de Young in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park make up the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the largest public arts institution in the city and one of the largest art museums in the United States.
