He was born Lionel Herbert Blythe on April 28, 1878 in Philadelphia, the son of actors Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew Barrymore. ("Barrymore" was a stage name.) Though raised a Catholic, he attended Philadelphia's Episcopal Academy.
