MacinTalk is Apple's text-to-speech, or speech synthesizer, extension that allows Mac documents to "talk" their text using a range of computerized voices. MacinTalk (v1.0.2) was relased on April 15, 1985 and works on Mac OS 1.x to Mac OS 6.x.
MacinTalk was developed by Joseph Katz and Mark Barton who later founded SoftVoice, Inc. which currently markets TTS engines for Windows, Linux and embedded platforms. MacinTalk used direct access to the original Macintosh sound hardware and all attempts to license the source code by Apple to update it for newer Macs failed.

Mac Text-to-Speech. Many computers now come with TTS capability - they can read text out loud. On Macs, this capability is called MacinTalk or PlainTalk and can be used via the "SimpleText" program. To listen to some synthetic speech: First, open SimpleText: go under the Apple icon to “Other Applications” to SimpleText.
