Jun 27, 2022 · Menthol cigarettes could soon be prohibited in the United States if new tobacco product standards proposed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are finalized and take effect. Prohibiting menthol as a “characterizing flavor” in cigarettes is expected to make them less appealing, reducing diseases and deaths caused by cigarette smoking.
Studies show that menthol cigarettes increase initiation of smoking, decrease cessation, and make it harder for Black smokers to quit compared to non-Black smokers. This menthol ban will save an enormous number of lives—one study estimates that it could prevent more than 600,000 deaths by 2050.
