About the Artist. The youngest son of Hispanic parents, Miguel Martinez was born and has lived in Taos, New Mexico since 1951. He discovered his interest in the arts during high school where he enjoyed his hands-on experience with paints, clay and other media.
A descendent of one of the oldest Spanish families in northern New Mexico, Miguel Martinez continues to live and work there. His highly stylized and unique interpretations of faces of women, done in oil pastel, have made him an international favorite and his work an ever-recognizable icon.

Glance around Martinez’s studio, and it’s easy to identify his favorite artists—books on Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Rufino Tamayo, and Richard Diebenkorn are stacked on shelves and tables. On one wall hangs a pencil drawing by Diego Rivera, a sketch of the Mexican army during the revolution.
He is know for modernist paintings of the faces women, whose mysterious, illusive and provocative expressions fill almost the entire canvas. Martinez has created these women in an ambiance of everyday life, giving them a voice which has proven to speak to the hearts of a universal following.

Still in his early twenties, Miguel found a style, which has become his signature and recognized World Wide. Moved by deep respect and admiration, he began a series of large faces of women, enlarging and stylizing the eyes, and endowed them with mystery of illusive and provocative expressions.
