He was portrayed by actor Patrick Troughton. 53 of his 119 episodes are missing. Within the series' narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in the TARDIS, frequently with companions.
Many of the early episodes in which Troughton appeared were among those discarded by the BBC. Troughton found Doctor Who' s schedule (at the time, 40 to 44 episodes per year) gruelling, and decided to leave the series in 1969, after three years in the role.
